The first Buddhist temple to be built in Sri Lanka following Mahinda Thera's arrival was Thuparamaya, which was named for the place where it was built. The Thuparamaya Stupa is the oldest Dagoba that was built on the island. It dates back to the time of King Devanampiya Tissa and can be seen in the holy region of Mahamewna park.
